Murray ( Murray River) - The largest river in Australia, forming, together with its longest tributary Darling, largest river system in the country area of more than 1 000 000 km (about 12 % across the continent).
Murray River originates in the Australian Alps in the south-east, crosses the southern part of nearly parallel and then, turning sharply to the south, falling into the Indian Ocean.
River, especially in its present state, are shallow, many of its tributaries dry up and used for irrigation.
The river passes the majority of the boundaries between the states Victoria and New South Wales.
